"We will be most happy if you will remember this publication as the love-child of a holy union between rebellion and creativity" (Afterword). The First Edition contains short stories and poems written by the students of Illinois Wesleyan University.

"The main criterion for the selection of articles and poems has been 'a personal and sensitive recording of emotion, observation, reflection, thought, or confrontation." (Dedication, v.1). The Iris was founded on November 4, 1971, to commemorate the 200th birthday anniversary of James Montgomery (1771-1854), the British journalist and poet who edited "The Sheffield Irish" for 31 years, and to perpetuate the memory of his humanitarian principles.

Tributaries is the creative arts journal of IWU that publishes a book of student poetry, short fiction, art, photography, and music every semester. "Tributaries is Illinois Wesleyan University's journal of fine arts, celebrating the strongest and most original work being created by IWU students" (v.4:no.2)

The Wesleyan Bee Publishing Company is responsible for this content. "The Company is composed ot ten members--five from the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and five from the Phi Gamma Delta. However, it is not under the control of those fraternities, nor of any society at all." (page 8, v.1:no.1)
